Our Moisturiser 01 contains 5% unrefined, certified organic broccoli seed oil, a wonderful ingredient with near magical powers!
The oil itself is made by cold-pressing the tiny seeds of broccoli sprouts and is a delicate pale green and odourless. Its key properties, from the perspective of skin care are that it:
- Contains up to 80-100 times more of the antioxidant sulforaphane than the rest of the plant.
- Is almost 50 percent erucic acid, which is a monounsaturated omega-9 fatty acid.
- Contains retinol (a skin renewing form of Vitamin A).
- Rich in Vitamins B, C and K.
Each of these properties offers benefits to the skin. For example, a moisturiser should not only moisturise, but prevent moisture loss and protect the skin from damage. That is why so many products contain mineral oil and petroleum-based ingredients. Yet, such ingredients may also block the pores. Broccoli seed oil, on the other hand, protects and hydrates by forming a greaseless layer that keeps moisture in. Or, to offer another example, Vitamin C (which it contains) has been shown to counteract the effects of damage from UV rays. Or, to offer a third example, skin thrives on fatty acids that mirror the ones found in the epidermis. The erucic acid in broccoli seed oil calms and sooths the skin and can work as an anti-inflammatory on rashes, eczema, psoriasis and other skin conditions.
The fact that broccoli seed oil is so good for the skin isn’t, perhaps, surprising, when one considers how beneficial it is as a food. To quote Dr. Michael Greger, author of How Not to Die: ‘Broccoli is incredible. It can prevent DNA damage and metastatic cancer spread; activate defences against pathogens and pollutants; help to prevent lymphoma; boost the enzymes that detox your liver; target breast cancer stem cells; and reduce the risk of prostate cancer progression.’In short, broccoli seed oil is light, non-greasy, and easily absorbed. It hydrates, protects, moisturises, nourishes, calms and sooths.
